sports crew
At Charlwood Village Primary School we understand the importance that PE and sport plays in keeping us fit, healthy and ready to learn.
Our pupils take part in the daily physical activities such as a run and active breaks. We have several coaches enhancing PE and sport in our school through the delivery of bespoke sport and physical activity lessons and providing support and training for our teachers.
In addition to this, pupils in Year 4, 5 and 6 have the opportunity to be a part of Sports Crew as a Sports Leader. Pupils have to apply for this role and be interviewed for it. Once Sports Leaders have been appointed, they will attend specific leadership training with Active Surrey to develop their knowledge, understanding and leadership skills ready to deliver activities to other pupils throughout the year.

Charlie H explains the roles of a Sports Leader at CVPS:
The Sports Leader role is about getting people more involved in sport and physical activity than they normally would be. As Sports Crew, we have a meeting every Tuesday to discuss what we will be doing the next week. We will discuss what games we will play, talk about how we’re going to lead them and test the games to see if they’re any good.
We then lead the role by asking children if they’d like to take part in an activity every break time. We also ask the children their preference of games. We like to run games that children enjoy to encourage those who wouldn’t normally play, to get involved and be active.
~ Charlie
Jackson G tells us more about his experience of Sports Leader training:
When we arrived at Horley Leisure Centre, we were given our Sports Crew t-shirts, a notebook to guide us through being a Sports Leader and shown a PowerPoint about leadership. We learnt about Mr NEDD (name, explain, demonstrate and deliver) and we talked about Sports Leader qualities.
Next, we played different games and one person read out a card which explained how to play the game. After we knew how to play the games, we given more cards to read through in groups. We then had to lead the games in front of other Sports Leaders.
At the end of the day, we were given our bronze badges and a certificate to show Charlwood Sports Leaders had completed their training.
It felt exciting not knowing what we were going to do next in the training. I enjoyed doing the training and learning new skills. Once we got the badges, the Charlwood Sports Leaders were amazed by what they achieved.
~ Jackson
Kitty describes what the application process was like for her:
I completed my application form with my mum. We talked about what we would do whilst being a Sports Leader. We discussed if someone wasn’t being active we would ask them to join and play.
I did an interview with Mrs Dance and Charlie and they asked me how I would run games and how I would make sure everyone was included. I was nervous before my Sports Leader interview but afterwards I felt amazing.
When I got my letter to tell me I was a Sports Leader I felt happy and excited to have our first meeting!
~ Kitty
