Charlwood Village Infant School

Early Years Print E-mail

Early childhood is a crucial stage in development, as a significantly high proportion of learning takes place from birth to age six. At Charlwood we offer high quality care and well structured learning experiences. We accept children into school from the September after their fourth birthdays. They attend mornings only and usually become fulltime in the term in which they reach five. Summer born children may start fulltime in January subject to agreement.

Our Reception class is accommodated in a large, airy, and well equipped classroom, with access to a safe and secure outdoor area. Early Years Classroom

The first half-term is a settling down time during which the children, parents and practitioners get to know each other and develop relationships of mutual trust and respect. The children get to know school routines and expectations and learn to feel included and valued. Throughout the year the children follow a well planned, carefully structured curriculum based on the national Foundation Stage Guidelines. Learning takes place through a rich mixture of direct teaching, purposeful play, and real experiences, giving the children time to talk, question, listen, observe, experiment and reflect.

At Charlwood we believe that the progress the children make and the attitudes they develop depend onEarly Years the partnership forged between home and school. Parents are made welcome in the classroom and teachers make themselves accessible to discuss problems, and try to keep you fully informed. Your help is appreciated with simple homework tasks such as sharing books and playing Maths games. Periodic meetings take place during the year for parents on how best to support their children at school.
