Charlwood Village Infant School

The Curriculum

The classrooms are organised in a flexible way to provide the best environment that we can offer, containing workshop areas for language work, maths, science, art and craft, computers and design technology as well as quieter areas such as the book corner.

Cross curricular themes link the various strands of the National Curriculum and the teachers plan to ensure a broad balance is maintained. Besides reviewing the curriculum areas and monitoring their effectiveness, staff expertise and awareness are increased through self evaluation, group discussion and in-service training all of which results in the enrichment of the learning process.

Teaching is a mixture of individual, group, class or even whole school styles in the case of singing times and assemblies.

Positive attitudes are encouraged by the teachers which help build children’s self esteem and independence.

As well as developing their academic abilities, the children’s aesthetic, creative and physical skills are nurtured through activities such as art, music, drama, design and PE.

In this way we strive to give each child a firm foundation on which to grow and flourish.

Assessment is an ongoing process and the children’s structured learning is carefully noted on their records of achievement so as to ensure both continuity and progression.

Throughout the Reception Year a Foundation Stage Profile will be compiled for each child. This informs both parents and staff of children’s developing abilities.

Y2 children go through National Tasks and Tests. Last years results are included in this prospectus.

Early Years Print E-mail

Early childhood is a crucial stage in development, as a significantly high proportion of learning takes place from birth to age six. At Charlwood we offer high quality care and well structured learning experiences. We accept children into school from the September after their fourth birthdays. They attend mornings only and usually become fulltime in the term in which they reach five. Summer born children may start fulltime in January subject to agreement.

Children have a natural curiosity in their environment and it is this early exploration of their world that forms the basis of our science today. The science is topic based and develops into the other curriculum areas.   Children work best from first hand experience and we give plenty of opportunities for discovery.

Mathematics Print E-mail

We want our children to be confident in all areas of maths, be it calculating, measure or problem solving. Mathematics must be relevant and purposeful, and often open ended which allows the children to begin at the same point and develop the activity to their appropriate level.
