Regular attendance is vital to any child’s education. Breaks in continuity make teachers’ jobs more difficult and can upset your child’s confidence and learning pattern. If your child is absent for any reason please notify us by letter even if you have telephoned first. If you have not telephoned by mid-day on the first day of absence we shall try to contact you to check on the whereabouts of your child. Under Government regulations any unexplained absence can be followed up by the Education Welfare Officer and the school is obliged to publish any unauthorised absences.
Once again prior warning about a doctor’s or dental appointment can help avoid any confusion.
The official absence figures for the school for the last year are as follows:
Authorised: 5.8% Unauthorised: 0%
Unauthorised absence occurs when the school has not been notified of a valid reason for a child’s absence.
The Reception children use the outside patio area daily - weather permitting! - and we recommend that they wear the Charlwood blue jog pants and sweat shirts as a more practical alternative to the regular uniform. The uniform is predominately royal blue, grey and white, and all Charlwood items marked thus * are available from the PTA.
School meals are served in a separate dining hall and the children are encouraged to eat the daily cooked midday meal. The present cost is £1.90 and dinner money should be paid weekly on a Monday (or every half term). It should arrive in a sealed envelope or purse clearly marked with the child’s name and containing the exact money please, or a cheque made payable to SURREY COUNTY COUNCIL. Alternatively, children may bring a packed lunch which they, too, eat in the dining hall. Lunch arrangements can only be changed with two weeks notice.
Each year in Charlwood, we celebrate the arrival of summer with a traditional May Day ceremony. As well as country dances - with audience participation! - we have a Maypole and with it the children perform a series of quite complex weaves and patterns in front of an invited audience of parents, relatives and a special VIP. The whole day peaks with the crowning of the May King and May Queen.
The Royal Couple achieve their elevated status by way of a school-wide vote and it is a recognition of a childs popularity amongst his or her peers.
